Late yesterday evening (or really early this morning, if you prefer) I got back from my long-anticipated vacation, taking a cruise on the Norwegian Jewel from Vancouver, BC to LA.   The cruise was one of the best decisions I've ever made.   The trip went almost like clockwork due to advanced planning.   I was dropped off at the Pasco, WA airport to catch my flight to Seattle by my Aunt Barbara on the 19th; the trip through airport security was a breeze and my flight was on time.   Once in Seattle I took the light rail to the International District and then went next door to King Street Station to catch the AMTRAK bus service to Vancouver.   T

   While the world's attention is on the World Cup, today marks the 100th Anniversary of the Shot that Shook the 20th Century.   100 years ago today the terrorist/freedom fighter Gavrilo Princep assassinated the Austro-Hungarian heir the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Bosnia and lit the fuse that ignited the powder-keg of Europe.   At the time it was seen as tragic but not earth-shattering, and on the surface European diplomacy and business went on as it had the day before.   Beneath the surface, however, the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister was dragging the nations of Europe to war by telling Austria's ally Imperial Germany they did

Well, here it is 2014.   A year so chock full of events to look forward to, though for me one stands out above the others.   August 1 is the 100th anniversary of "The Guns of August", the start of the First World War.   This centenary needs to be honored and celebrated because the First World War set the tone for the rest of the 20th Century.   It marked the end of Renaissance Europe and the easy confidence that reigned over Europe since then end of the Crimean War.   It saw the introduction or reintroduction of concepts such as total war, genocide, concentration camps, communist tyranny and industrialized war.   It saw war being extended to
